The road to success is always under construction

Dirt road to success

Success is not a destination,
it's a journey.

Are you just starting out in business?  If you are, please let me know in the comments the successes and pitfalls you have experienced.

In the rush to success often what is not taken into account is the fact the journey can be quite boring/tedious.

You will read how successful people are making six-figure incomes with what seems like very little effort and they do it in some impossible time, like, two weeks.

The truth is, when you start on the road to success, it's not a walk in the park.  The sooner you understand this the sooner you can be successful.  I have always said that it takes about five years to be really successful.  The reason is, there is so much to learn, then you have to implement what you have learned and at the same time build trust.

Your niche is important.

You also need to pick a niche which will fulfil all your requirements.  Such as, is it a product that you like and are willing to promote over a number of years?  Are you experienced with this product?  Is it a product that is in high demand?  If it's a new product, can you create the demand?

These are some of the questions you need to ask yourself.  Be honest with yourself too.

Be prepared to work hard at your business.

You will need to work your business like a job.  Setting aside a few hours a day or more for your business.  If you cannot discipline yourself to do that then online marketing may not be for you.  It does take time and commitment.

On the upside, if you are prepared to take the time and do the work, it will be more fulfilling than working for another company, because, your income, hours and holidays will be determined by you and not another person/company.

Luckily, it doesn't cost very much to start an online business.  There is very little capital involved in online marketing unlike a traditional business.

Where to from here?

Hopefully, now you have understood the requirements needed to start your own business.  The next step is to start.  For most people, creating a website is a good way to start.  You control the outcome.

There are plenty of free website builders available on the net.  Be careful though as there can be a lot of hidden costs that they don't tell you about up front.

.

Your next option is to create a shop/marketplace on eBay, Shopify or Etsy to name a few.  These are good if you have products to sell.

Amazon is a good place to earn commissions from if you don't have your own products.  The commissions are small though.  Amazon has a great reputation and intends to keep it that way.

Sign up for some marketing advice.

If you have not started creating your own business yet, (even if you have), you may like to take a look at Wealthy Affiliate.  They have some of the best trainers in the market and don't cost an arm and a leg for you to get the information you need to be successful.

If you have any questions, please put them below in the comments and I will endeavour to answer them, usually within a few hours.

Failure is not a bad thing.

There is too much hype regarding success and failure.  Every successful person has been a successful failure, so the trick is to keep going but intelligently.  None of us have all the answers so it's good to ask questions when you are stuck.  This is the beauty of an online community, there is so much information available.

Also, there are no quick paths, no matter what the advertising says.  Grow steadily and be patient.

  1. Hello Michael,

Brilliant article that breaks down financial success. I am thinking about affiliate marketing and has yet to decide on a niche.

I understand it will not be easy and will require a lot of work and dedication. I will take a look at wealthy affiliate and hopefully one day be as successful as you!

    Thanks,
    Eric

  2. Hey there,

I completely agree with you. Over the years, I’ve come to realize that success is not an event at all, it’s more of a continuous journey than anything. SiteRubix is always the tool I use to build my site and I’m having a blast with it since, the best thing about them is their support team. I can always rely on them to solve my issues. 🙂

    Cheers,
    Anh

    1. I’m glad to hear that, Anh.  I am sure you will be successful with your online business as you do have the right attitude to make it work for you.

      Michael.

  3. Great advice for those who want to start an online business. What most people do not realize is that for you to be successful online, you need to put in a lot of time and effort.

Currently, I have two websites which I am trying so hard to maintain. I haven’t made any money yet but I believe that my road to success is under construction. I know that there’s a lot of work to be done, however, I believe that at the end of the day, all my hard work will pay off.

What advice can you give to someone like me who has a full time job but want to much to transition from an employee to entrepreneur? How much time do you think I should spend working on my business daily in order to succeed?

    1. Thanks for your comment Alysanna.  There are so many variables.  If you can, you need to put in about 20 hours a week which will probably eat up your weekend.  In the long run, inside of a few years, it will free you up to do more of the things you love.  The sacrifices at the beginning are huge but the rewards are immeasurable.

      Michael.

  4. Hello friend,

Thanks a lot for sharing this helpful information. I have really learned a lot. You have taught me that no online success comes just in a night. And I think I need to be a little bit patient.

I have started online marketing and have been wondering just when at all I will start to see some success coming my way. I have been working so hard doing all I can but don’t really seem to see anything at all.

Now I have learned to be patient. And I know as you said If I keep on and I don’t give up, with time I will start seeing some success coming my way.

I have seen your recommended program and since it free to join I have created an account with them. I’m hoping that as you said they will assist me with my business so I can grow it.

    1. I am glad to hear you have made the move, Stephen.  As long as you keep learning and applying what you learn you can’t go far wrong.  I wish you all the best.  You may find this tutorial I wrote of benefit to you: 3 Rules for Success

  5. Thanks for this post Michael and you are right that if you do not put in the work then success will not happen for you. It can be tedious and boring if you are not happy with what you have chosen for your niche. It most certainly is not a walk in the park.

We are all so very willing at the beginning to get going and put in as much as you can and you seem to be able to manage to spend more time on things but, then things tend to happen in life and everything can become overwhelming and you can lose your way a bit. You just need to try and set that time aside everyday and keep going whenever you can.

    1. Thanks, Cheryl. I agree with you that somehow you have to set the time aside. Otherwise you end up doing the same job for the rest of your life.

      Regards,
      Michael.
